FEATURED ON NEWORLEANS.COM's LIST OF thE BEST VEGAN RESTAURANTS IN TOWN!
La Macarena's first location was the first ever Pupuseria on the East Bank - a 20 seat eatery serving premium dishes from El Salvador. In 2008, La Macerena's uptown location opened and has been honored to serve as the first Latin American themed restaurant in the Riverbend.
For years the late Isabel Ochoa-Galvez ran our kitchen. A first generation immigrant from El Salvador, she learned most of her recipes from her mother Eva. Her son Manny, who crafted every detail of the La Macarena aesthetic, now runs the show.
Can You Say
/pu'pusa/?
A pupusa is a thick, handmade corn tortilla stuffed with queso (usually a soft cheese called Quesillo), chicharrón (fried pork cracklings) or frijoles refritos (refried beans). There is also the pupusa revuelta which is stuffed with mixed ingredients, such as queso, frijoles refritos and chicharrón.
Pupusas have 2000 years of delicious history and have grown in popularity here in the States for the last four decades. See for yourself what we have to offer!
